Have you ever been in a car and turned up the stereo system and the sound is just bland? weak? unexciting? disappointing? 95% of the time, it is because the speakers are small and underpowered, basically worthless.
I stumbled upon this Amazon only product soon after I purchased my Panasonic 54″ plasma TV. I decided that I wanted matching hardware in my living room and Panasonic is a very reputable company in the electronics industry, so I began searching through Panasonic home theater systems on Amazon and I saw this setup with very large speakers.
I am not exactly what you would call an audiophile or audio expert but I always have a “stereo system” connected to my TV because I love to watch sports and ESPECIALLY play video games in HD. Up until this point I would simply buy a home stereo system with 2 large speakers and maybe a subwoofer, and connect it to my TV, but since moving into my new house with new furniture and TV and everything else, I decided to get a full “home theater system” with surround speakers and rear speakers and all the inputs and connections…
I have been noticing the current trend in home theater speakers where everything seems to be getting smaller. Main speakers are smaller, side and rear speakers are smaller…. and I may not be a genius, but I know that better and fuller sound comes from a bigger speaker. There is a wider range of noise made with a bigger speaker. I just wasn’t confident when I see a full home theater system with five or seven 2″ speakers and expect to be blown away with sound quality and power. You just arent going to convince me that bigger speakers don’t matter.
That being said, this system stuck out like a sore thumb when browsing Panasonic home theater systems on Amazon. 2 large speaker cabinets, 1000 watts, and a 10″ subwoofer and 3 surround speakers, and at the time it was like $270 or something!! There was no question in my mind that this would be my best bet.
I ordered it the week before Thanksgiving, and it came in the week after Thanksgiving. First thing I did was take it home and hook it up. Speaker connections are very simple, I Was impressed. No more threading the litle wirtes into the mouth that bites down on them, just a plastic plug. I was disappointed in the lack of INPUT slots in the back. There is an HDMI out, HD component out, and then only like a digital audio input. I am used to being able to hook everything I wanted to up to the stereo system if I need to. This time I was limited by the connections so my entire system is surviving on the Digital Audio Output from my TV to the Digital Audio Input on the stereo system. This means that I have to have everything running through the TV, and then to the stereo system on that one wire.
Which actually is fine. It works fine. Sounds great. I just like a few different options, but then again, I havent made electronics purchases within about the last 4 years so maybe things have changed. And I never had any experience with this little tiny digital audio wire but it apparently works great.
Sound quality is great, VERY powerful system, I am so happy I found this system instead of buying some of the other systems with entirely small speakers, and end up regretting the purchase and hating the sound quality. I play games with lots of action and explosions, gunfire, etc, and with this system you can really appreciate and feel the depth of the sound and hard hitting, higher powered larger speakers and subwoofer.
I have heard my sub run out of power on one occasion (last Saturday night) when I had been drunk and had some friends over to impress and turned the sound up so loud, and the sub woofer to the highest setting, and also the subwoofer boost option. Due to my state of mind at the time, I cannot say for sure what the weakest link was, but I will say that one of the first things that stood out to me when installing the system is that the subwoofer should have its own AC cord to the wall. Maybe there is some way to modify this part myself, but that is something for a different day. The sub is just so big, and when you see this tiny little wire that is supposedly powering it, it stands out as a visible weak link.
However, even under heavy and above average usage on video games and programs and movies, this system’s performance is superior to any other that I have heard from the same price range. And only under the most extreme, alcohol induced circumstances, have I heard a flaw in the audio system, and that was only involving the subwoofer itself.
I cannot reccomend a large speaker stereo system enough, and with the price on this setup, it is a no brainer. For an average or beginner, even experienced user in audio, you will not find a more impressive system for the price, and it is ONLY ON AMAZON for some reason. If you have a Panasonic TV, it makes this purchase even more of a no brainer because they are made to work so well together.
The only way you could be disappointed in this is if you expected a blu-ray player and didn’t read the product description. I plan on getting a PS3 one day and don’t plan on rebuilding my entire DVD collection over to blu-ray any time soon so blu-ray wasnt an issue with me. Plus movies like on Netflix are starting to stream movies to game systems in HD, no blu-ray player required, no wait required, just download and watch before the download is even finished…
But if you have half a brain, you will not at all be disappointed in this system, and the biggest problem you will have with it is deciding what furniture or speaker stands to mount or set your two large speakers on. Maybe they fit on your TV stand or entertainment center, but if you have a 50″ or larger TV, you are going to have a seperate task of setting the large speakers in tandem with your television becuase they dont come with the prissy little stands for all 2″ of speaker glory like the other stereo systems you may be inclined to buy.
